The Anna Maria City Jail was built in 1927. There was a tavern-dance hall on the island and those who frequented it would get drunk and cause trouble. So they built a jail with bars but no windows so the mosquitos would get to the trouble makers locked up for the night. This jail was used up until the 1940’s until it caught on fire. Pictured is what remains today.

(This shot was taken on Anna Maria Island, Florida.)
