Jekyll Island’s earliest inhabitants were Native Americans. Then in 1562 French explorers discovered the area. During the Civil War the Confederate Army occupied the island. In the late 1800’s to around the 1930’s Jekyll Island was a private destination for the nation’s wealthiest people. By the 1940’s this island was opened to the public.
