Magnolia Plantation was established in 1676 and is still under control of the Drayton’s, the original family. Magnolia was first a rice plantation and some of the slave cabins are still on the property. During the American Revolution the grounds were occupied by American troops. And during the Civil War the Union burnt down the plantation. In 1870 the family opened up the gardens to the public, which saved the plantation from ruin. Some sections of the gardens are over 300 years old.
