The Merchants Hotel was originally built as a three story pharmacy in 1872. Then in 1892, it was added on to and became a hotel. Rooms were only 25 cents per night. It is said that outlaws of the Wild West like Wild Bill Hickok and Jesse James stayed here.

During the Civil War, Georgia, daughter of the pharmacist, fell in love with a solider named Charlie. She hid love letters in the walls of the hotel which were found 100 years later. The later letters revealed that Charlie was unfaithful to Georgia and so she ended the relationship. Some believe that Charlie still wanders the halls remorsefully searching for his lost love.
