Castillo de San Marcos (St. Mark’s Castle) is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. This Spanish fort was built to protect Spain’s claims in the New World. It is over 315 years old making it the oldest structure in St. Augustine, Florida. Construction of the fort started in 1672 and took 23 years to complete. The fort was first attacked by the British in 1702. They burned the city but could not take over the fort. However, in 1763, Florida became a British colony and Castillo was used as a military prison during the Revolutionary War. At the end of the war it was returned to Spain until Florida became a United States Territory in 1821.
